Hotels were, and still are incredibly important aspects of any large city, providing travelers with shelter, food, refreshment and other similar services on a commercial basis. They cater to the needs of individuals on a Jourdan away from home, offering amenities typically found in households.
The Clinton Hotel, one of the most enduring structures in Jordan’s history, has its origins dating back to before 1856. The drawing reveals that it was initially a two-story building known as the Clinton House. You can also see one of the main forms of transportation in this era, a stagecoach, along with the Erie Canal which is just outside of view in the illustration.
By 1900, a third story had been added and the establishment was renamed “Hotel Clinton”. Over the years, this historic building has undergone several name changes, transitioning from the Clinton House to Hotel Clinton, then to Hotel Jordan, and finally to the Jordan Hotel as it is known today.
By 1955, the establishment previously known as Hotel Jordan had been officially renamed as the Jordan Hotel, signifying its firm establishment within the community. The variety of signs that the hotel displayed throughout its existence is a noteworthy aspect, indicating its significance in the town’s history at various junctures.
The photograph offers a captivating glimpse into the past. It not only features the hotel, but also reveals a time when the Trolley station was a gas station, as suggested by the Mobil sign near the telephone pole. Additionally, the presence of a traffic light, now absent, hints at a period of substantial traffic in the area. These visual markers serve as intriguing historical footnotes, painting a vivid picture of the town’s dynamic past.
